Ann Arbor Michigan Community: New Michigan Smoking Ban
Thursday, December 17, 2009
New Michigan Smoking Ban to come into force thanks to a bill which the Senate's 24-13 approval of the bill, followed by the House's 75-30 vote.
Michigan is set to be the 38th state to ban smoking in public places. Despite the feeling being mixed about the ban - some local business owners in downtown are concerned it will negatively effect their business and the local economy.
However, some establishments have banned smoking before a legal ban was in place and said that after an initial dip, trade was right back to normal!
The health of the state and its citizens is of the utmost importance;
Some 66 percent of Michigan residents said they favored the ban in a poll conducted in March and workers at restaurants and bars where smoking is allowed are 50 percent more likely to develop lung cancer. The ban will take place May 1 2010.
