Ann Arbor Michigan Community: New Library in Ann Arbor in Discussion as well as other City & County ideas!
Monday, October 12, 2009
With lots going on in Ann Arbor with the city and county planning for the future, it is hard to know where to start with what is going on in the community!
Well, Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners met and moved forward with their budget plans (including a new Economic Development Millage which is designed to help fund increased job creation and lowering unemployment for the county). Also, closer to home in Ann Arbor itself, the City Council have been discussing a draft guide for design restrictions for downtown Ann Arbor. The document is a part of the A2D2 rezoning process.
However importantly for local residents board members for the Ann Arbor District Library had heard from library staff about hundreds of projects that have been accomplished over the past six years and have been discussing the prospect of a new library downtown and if so, when and where it would be created! The original project was halted last november after nearly $1 million of design and consulting work had been carried out. These plans have been kept safe for reuse. However with a new library downtown estimated to cost around $70 million, beyond existing millage rate increases, how to fund such a project in light of the economy is something which is hotly debated. Similarly the choice of location is something which is also not finalized, with some favoring demolishing and rebuilding the existing site off Fifth avenue, with some supporters favoring relocating to a new location.
After all Dexter got a great new library this year!
What is for sure is that such a facility would be a great asset to Ann Arbor. It is clear with all that is going on at a city and county level that the future is bright for Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County! Which is why the area is a top relocation destination for those across the nation and internationally.
