An Alternate Form of Transport - Ann Arbor Bike Taxis?
Wednesday, February 18, 2009
Some local Ann Arbor residents are looking for alternative ways to get around town. One local in particular, Barbara Annis, is trying to garner support for Ann Arbor bike taxis or pedicabs. This is a pedaled vehicle that transport people from one place to another. Pedicabs are becoming more and more popular in cities such as New York, Boston and San Diego.
Annis originally sparked the idea after hearing about a grant proposal from the Ann Arbor Community Foundation - she believes it's a good fit for Ann Arbor and supports the city push for non-motorized transport. She would like to bring a fleet of 10 cabs to the city and hopes to see Ann Arbor provide the service for free. This would of course require the program be funded by sponsorships (each fully equipped bike cabs runs from $3,500 to $4,000).
Although the idea seems to be well-liked, some are concerned about the feasibility of running such a service within a small population density. Winter weather conditions are also an obvious concern. An existing business owner of a pedicab service in Grand Rapids, MI says population density isn't an issue - Darin Galinis of Elite Pedicabs explains it's all about the nightlife. In an area with a healthy nightlife, pedicabs are viable. He also mentioned that while winter weather can make for an uncomfortable ride, it doesn't seem to hamper the business, he is making as much money on cold winter nights as he is in the summertime.
Many local Ann Arbor programs are in support of the idea, what do you think?
